Sustainable Packaging Design for Pineapple Tarts

Presenting a sustainable packaging design that celebrates the rich flavors of pineapple tarts while prioritizing eco-consciousness.

This innovative approach repurposes the often-overlooked pineapple core, transforming it into an eco-friendly packaging solution that captivates both the palate and the planet.
One-third of the 1.6 million tonnes of residential waste disposed of in Singapore is the packaging. Although plastic makes up more than half of total packaging, only 4% of plastic garbage is recycled.

The Lunar New Year festive season has always been accompanied by increased consumption and waste, such as plastic containers from snacks

At the heart of this design lies a journey of trial and error, as I explore ways to minimise waste and maximise resourcefulness. By utilising the pineapple core, traditionally discarded as waste, this packaging design turns what was once overlooked into a valuable and purposeful component.
The tactile experience of unpacking this sustainable packaging is a delight in itself. The sturdy yet biodegradable material of the pineapple core protects the delicate pineapple tarts within, ensuring their freshness while reducing environmental impact.
The rotting process of biodegradable pineapple packaging begins when the packaging is exposed to the right conditions, including moisture, oxygen, and microbial activity. Over time, the packaging starts to break down as microorganisms consume the organic material, breaking it into smaller components.
User Journey; Repurposing Basket and Disposal

By opting for biodegradable packaging, such as pineapple packaging, we contribute to reducing the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste in landfills or oceans.
The packaging's ability to rot and biodegrade naturally aligns with sustainable practices and supports a circular economy by minimizing the long-term environmental impact.
